English

At Stormont, Literacy is the thread running through all learning. Literacy learning takes place when we are sharing a story in assembly, interpreting a word problem or recording the method in a Science experiment. Fundamental skills of the subject (as set out in the National Curriculum) are taught daily. Lessons are bespoke, catering for the needs for all learners. In Prep, English is often taught in half classes so that pupils can receive individual attention, enabling them to reach their full potential. Our expectations of the children’s achievement are high – and in preparing them for 11+ entrance tests, we also hope to inspire a love of reading, writing and communicating. When girls leave, they are equipped with skills essential for their future.

We promote a love of reading and writing through a variety of initiatives.

Lessons are brought to life with a variety of fictional texts, including Classic and Contemporary fiction, ensuring that children are exposed to a range of authors. Across a term, pupils will cover fiction, non-fiction and a poetry unit. Girls adopt the style of authors such as Michael Morpurgo, Malorie Blackman, Lewis Carroll and Emma Carroll. Homework complements classwork and reinforces skills covered in class.

Every child is assessed on entry and given a book to read with a high interest level to read and understand. Reading Schemes continue into Prep until a time when they are ready to become independent readers.

We celebrate World Book Day annually with a whole school theme, often generating writing which shows progression across the school.

Authors, as well as other adults, visit the school, sharing their enthusiasm for reading and writing. Stories are shared regularly in assemblies. They are captured by listening to stories, no matter their age and stage.

Girls are encouraged to visit the school library regularly. It contains a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, complimenting their learning in class. Library skills are also taught within lessons. Knowledge of current affairs is promoted through the school’s subscription to weekly magazines for children.

I really enjoy the creative homework we do, putting what we have learnt into a book review or a diary entry.
